About the Role

Cummins Inc. is seeking a motivated Apprentice – Engine Workshop Technician to join our Distribution Business Segment at Sibanye-Stillwater Bathopele Mine and Tharisa Mine in North West. This hands-on apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience and develop technical skills while working alongside experienced professionals in a globally recognised company.


Key Responsibilities

  • 🔧 Support Workshop Operations: Assist with day-to-day workshop activities to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
  • 🧼 Maintain Cleanliness and Order: Clean, inspect, and disassemble components to maintain a safe, organised, and efficient work environment.
  • ⚙️ Master Repair Techniques: Follow Standard Repair Times (SRTs) and Cummins procedures to perform basic repairs and maintenance effectively.
  • 📋 Accurate Documentation: Complete job cards, work reports, and time sheets accurately to ensure proper record-keeping.
  • 📚 Skill Development: Participate in structured training aligned with technical and business requirements.
  • 🛠️ Tool and Equipment Care: Maintain cleanliness and proper operation of tools to ensure readiness and longevity.
  • ⚠️ Health & Safety Compliance: Follow Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies to maintain a safe work environment and prevent incidents.
  • 📢 Proactive Reporting: Report any operational issues or incidents to supervisors to support continuous improvement.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Proficiency in Product Repair & Maintenance: Assist in repairing and maintaining mechanical and electrical products, including engines and power generators, ensuring quality and efficiency.
  • Strong Mechanical Knowledge: Apply mechanical principles safely and efficiently while adhering to Cummins and industry standards.
  • Effective Diagnostics: Translate customer complaints into troubleshooting plans using specialised tools and software, and document results accurately.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensure all service documentation is precise and aligns with operational requirements.
  • Valid Driver’s Licence: Required to perform job-related tasks and travel as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following education pathways:

Option 1:

  • National Senior Certificate (Matric), plus
  • N3, N4, and N6 Certificates in Engineering Studies, including:
    • Mathematics
    • Engineering Science
    • Engineering Drawing or Mechanical Draughting
    • Mechanotechnics / Diesel Trade Theory / Motor Trade Theory
    • Power Machines, Fluid Mechanics, Physics, or Supervisory Management

Option 2:

  • National Senior Certificate (Matric), plus
  • NCV Level 4 qualification from a TVET College, including:
    • Engineering Processes
    • Professional Engineering Practice
    • Applied Engineering Technology
    • Automotive Repair & Maintenance
    • Mathematics
    • English (First Language)
    • Life Skills and Computer Literacy

Option 3:

  • NCV Level 4 qualification from a TVET College with the same relevant subjects as listed above.
